If you compare Danys Baez and Chris Ray, you will see that Baez has 111 career saves while Ray has 33. This difference has not stopped the Baltimore Orioles from making Baez as the setup man for Ray this season.

Baez was not happy about being made into a setup man and took the task very grudgingly. He said that he prefers being a closer as that is what he has been doing for most of his baseball career. He said that he took on the role to help his team win games and make it to the playoffs.

In 2005, when Baez played for Tampa Bay, he had 41 saves and in the 3 seasons he spent there, he had a total of 96 saves. Last he spent time between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves with a 4.63 ERA and had 9 saves from 17 opportunities.

During the offseason, Baez became a free agent and he signed a three year contract with the Orioles. Now, he will be taking the setup role from Todd Williams and LaTroy Hawkins. Both Williams and Hawkins could not perform and this resulted in Sam Perlozzo, Orioles manager, to use Ray during the eighth inning intermittently.

With Baez taking over the setup role, Ray will pitch just one inning at a time and if he pitches continuously for two or three days, the Baez would be expected to be a closer. On other days, Baez will be called upon for the eighth inning.

Baez has a career average of 3.54 ERA and Tampa Bays history he ranks second with 71 saves. In 2005, Baez was part of the All Star team.
